Indira Sagar Project or famously known as Polavaram project(Ramaiahpet(V), Polavaram(M), West Godavari(D)) is proposed by Government of Andhra Pradesh for diverting Godavari river through the link canal.

Facts About River Godavari:

Godavari, the second largest river in India has a Catchment area of 3,12,812 Sq. Km running 1,230 km with a maximum flood discharge of 36,00,000 cusecs at Dawaleswaram .

Benefits of the Project:

  • It is a terminal reservoir that makes waters utilizable which otherwise go waste by joining sea.
  • To stabilize10.50 Lakh acres of Ayacut during Rabi.
  • Irrigation facilities to 7.20Lakh Acres in four districts.
  • To generate 960 MW of power.
  • Supply of 23.44 TMC of water to Visakhapatnam steel plant
  • and industries in and around Visakhapatnam.
  • To divert 80 TMC of waters to Krishna River
  • (fulfilling the concept of interlinking of Rivers)
  • Indira Sagar Project is the only alternative to save 11 Lakh
  • Acres of Krishna delta.
  • Provides for assured Krishna waters to the projects located U/s
  • of Krishna Barrage in A.P. to benefit Rayalaseema and Telangana regions

Impact on Flood Prone Areas of District:

  • Most of the villages are submerged every year due to floods.
  • The people are temporarily rehabilitated every year during flood season.
  • Loss of human lives and property every year.
  • Most of the people are BPL are Tribals and live in unhealthy conditions.
  • They don’t have proper medical and educational facilities.
  • They will be rehabilitated in Resettlement villages with all the amenities and away from natural veracities.
  • Their cultural and ethnic Heritage will be protected.
  • They can be brought to the National main stream and health conditions will be improved.
